Hunter Hammett

John Hunter Hammett age 94 of passed away June 5, 2024 in Houston, TX. He was born June 10, 1929 in Athens, TX. Mr. Hammett, formerly of Tyler, TX resided in Plano, TX 1993 – 2022. He and his wife served as foreign missionaries of the Interntaional Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Taiwan for thirty-five years. 

He was a graduate of Tyler High School, Baylor University with a B.A. degree, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a B.D. degree, and Soo Chow University, Taipei, Taiwan with a Master’s Degree in Asian Studies. 

Before going overseas as a missionary, he served as pastor of two churches in East Texas, Friendship Baptist Church and Dixie Baptist Church, both in Smith County near Tyler. 

On November 25, 1954 he was married to Patsy Price, a marriage that lasted for 65 years, until her death in 2020. He and his wife were active members of The Heights Baptist Church in Plano after their retirement. 

He is survived by two sons, Joel T. Hammett and Glenn M. Hammett, and one daughter, Lydia O. Finch, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
