For Immediate Need: Call 281-541-0291
Information brokering and identity thefts are quickly becoming America's fastest growing industries. We must become more aware of what information needs to be protected and how discarding what you may consider junkmail could allow someone to steal your identity.
Operating under a variety of methods, identity thieves are obtaining key pieces of your identity and fraudulently using that information for various illegal reasons. Your Social Security number, driver's license number or credit card number will easily do the trick. AND YES! That unopened, pre-approved credit card application that you tossed in the garbage could allow someone to rob you of your identity.
The following information can be used to reduce the amount of personal information that can be exploited:
1. Pay close attention to a change in the amount of phone calls you receive. If you begin to experience an unusual amount of solicitation calls, it may be an indication that your spending habits have changed.
2. Release your Social Security number (SSN) only when necessary. It is the key to your credit and banking accounts.
3. Do not have your SSN printed on your checks. If your state uses your SSN for your driver's license number (e.g., Virginia), apply to have it changed.
4. Order your Social Security Earnings and Benefits Statements once a year to check for fraud by calling 800-772-1213. If your SSN is fraudulently used, report it to the Social Security Fraud Hotline 800-269-0271.
5. Shred any pre-approved credit applications, credit card receipts, bills and other financial information before tossing it in the trash.
6. Order your credit report once a year from the following three major credit reporting bureaus to check for inaccuracies and fraudulent use of your accounts. If you have been denied credit, you have 6o days to request a free copy of your credit report.
